From the National Center on Law and Elder Rights This week marked the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). When it was passed on July 26, 1990, the ADA ushered in a new era for people with disabilities, including older adults. The ADA promised that people with disabilities would be able to fully participate in all aspects of life, guaranteeing the right to vote, work, obtain an education, and access public accommodations and government, including housing. The ADA has increased the availability of home-based care and other programs that help older adults stay connected to their families and communities and out of institutions; lessened physical barriers to allow them to safely navigate their neighborhoods and created more options for accessible transportation; and made information and communication more accessible. The legal assistance, elder rights, and aging network can celebrate the ADA’s accomplishments and engage in building capacity and expertise to advance disability equity, dignity, access, and inclusion. Below are some resources from NCLER for advocates to use in their work to uphold rights and remove barriers to economic and personal independence.
